Sports – Tales from the Edge

By Blasita J. Lopez

Sports is a uniquely unifying type of event that transcends all boundaries! When we have a passion for that hometown squad, nothing will stop us from coming out with team colors-ablazing! And in Laredo, we have several great ones to choose from, that offer entertainment value for the spectator, especially our visitors.

Let’s start with semipro, the Laredo Lemurs, a recent addition to the sports scene. Did you know that you can get into a game for as little as $5? This is a steal! And the quality of the game is good baseball, inside an even more outstanding venue, the Uni-Trade Stadium; a $20 million project put in place by the City of Laredo for enhancement of life in our community. So any summertime visitors should really take time to check it out.

Laredo is also known as the home for the Laredo Heat Soccer Club, another major contender for titles over the past 10 years! Home field advantage is actually at the local Texas A&M International University campus, and again, this makes for an affordable outing for any soccer sports fan. The atmosphere at this game provides the best of bilingual heckling of refs and passionate, dramatic-action-packed local and contracted talent from both the United States and Mexico. They are members of the USL Premier Development League Mid South Division.

Aside from these quality sports experiences, any of our collegiate-level teams are standouts as well and are just as affordable to attend. The Laredo Community College (LCC) Palominos feature volleyball, baseball and tennis. All quality opponents from recognizable National Junior College Athletic Association member schools, with a record from our Men’s tennis team that shines bright by holding the most consecutive national men’s tennis championships in Division 1.

Then we go on to the Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) Dust Devils that feature a myriad of sports teams, that are just expanding by the minute because of their success in growing their student population. TAMIU NCAA Division II- Heartland Conference athletics include baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball and volleyball.

Spend some time checking out our many home teams the next time you visit! The Laredo CVB will be glad to connect you with the right schedule and venue location, just ask us, we are the local experts!
