Laredo, TX—July 6, 2010. City of Laredo Prepares for River Flooding Event. Authorities plan for rising flood waters along banks of Rio Grande.
Recent rains have saturated parts of northern Mexico and Southwest Texas and have prompted communities along the Rio Grande to prepare for imminent rising waters. The cities of Laredo, Nuevo Laredo and surrounding communities along the river are expecting a significant flood event that will impact our river banks.
The full effects will be seen in our area on Wednesday, July 7 – Thursday, July 8 when it will peak at 33 ft. Local authorities have met and are taking the following steps to ensure everything possible is done in the interest of public safety:
Bridge One will close Thursday, July 8, 2010 at 12:00 a.m. (Wednesday midnight.) However, City authorities will host an early morning meeting on Wednesday, July 7 at 7:30 a.m. to determine if part of the steel canopies on the bridge need to be removed to insure the structural integrity of the bridge. If it is determined that the canopies must be removed, the bridge will be closed by 8:30 a.m. that morning and will remain closed for approximately 72 hours: one day to remove the structures, one day for the closure, and another day to replace the structures.
Bridge Two, World Trade Center and Colombia Bridges will remain open.
Most importantly to note also, for residents of both sides of the river is that both municipalities will continue to offer uninterrupted water service to all residents. Residents in Laredo will see no impact to their water service; while citizens of Nuevo Laredo will have water service at 50% operating capacity, according to Mexican city authorities.
Local Authorities will continue to monitor situation and hold meetings with stakeholders to review updates and take necessary action.
