ESTAMPA MEXICANA -Exquisite Mexican Art Works Spanning from 1960 to 1990

Hi! It’s Aileen again!

I’m always on the look for cultural events in Laredo! Today I will tell you about the latest exhibition that the Office of the Mexican Consul General of Mexico in Laredo and the Laredo Community College Fine Arts Department have organized.

ESTAMPA MEXICANA -Exquisite Mexican Art Works Spanning from 1960 to 1990

I went to the Opening Reception, and let me tell you it was very interesting. Afterwards the exhibit was officially open to the public.

Let me give you a little history (just a little bit, I promise!)…

The art of printmaking and engraving has been practiced in  Mexico since the 19th century and it reached its peak in the 1920-1950s, right after the Mexican Revolution. It was also at its strongest during World War II and the Spanish Civil War, when several European artist found Mexico to be the perfect place to develop their art.

Through the decades it has been influenced by a variety of cultural movements not only happening in Mexico, but around the world. From geometric abstraction to the literary movement called “Realismo Magico” (“Magical Realism”), each decade and each artist brings a different approach to this technique. One of its greatest and most famous exponents was Jose Guadalupe Posada, whose favorite topic was the celebration of “Dia de los Muertos” (“Day of the Dead”).

The exhibit is open to the public at the LCC Visual Arts Gallery through July 19, 2012. It’s located across the street from the Martinez Fine & Performing Arts Center

There you will see 60 works from 1960 to 1990 that represent different movements and techniques.

Don’t miss the opportunity to view this unique art form!
